The MovePHX initiative is an “all-of-the-above” transportation strategy that will expand light rail and bus service and improve our streets. As our population increases, it’s more important than ever to put a comprehensive transportation plan in place that will benefit everyone who drives, walks or bikes around Phoenix.
MovePHX is a smart plan for growth.
The population in Phoenix is expected to nearly double over the next 30 years. If we act now, we can prevent more gridlock on our roads and freeways. Expanding both the light rail and bus system will provide residents access to practical, affordable, and convenient transportation alternatives while keeping more cars off the streets as we continue to attract more residents to our great city.
Public transportation connects students to classrooms.
Students in Phoenix rely heavily on the light rail and bus systems to get to campuses across the Valley. In fact, one in three riders is a student. The measure will connect more students to education centers, community colleges, and universities throughout the Valley. For example, ASU West and Grand Canyon University would join the U of A Medical School, ASU Downtown and ASU Tempe on the light rail lines.
Public transportation is helping those who need it.
Many people who rely on public transportation are lower-income families, residents without cars, individuals with disabilities and senior citizens. Approving the initiative will give people in the community new and expanded freedoms and the ability to maintain their independence. People will have more access to work, training, healthcare, and school with a more comprehensive transportation system.
MovePHX will spur economic development.
Public transportation options attract new companies to Phoenix and enable existing businesses to grow. Increasing Phoenix’s transportation infrastructure will enable us to attract and retain skilled workers and innovative businesses.
Economic development along the current light rail line has already topped $8 billion. A yes vote on Prop 104 will significantly increase this growth, attracting more businesses and the jobs they create to our city.
